The difference in AEO services vs SEO services is what the contract obliges the vendor to produce. An SEO retainer buys ranking work: technical fixes, a keyword map, content production, links, and a monthly position report. AEO services buy citation work: entity consistency, answer first page structure, crawler access, third party source coverage, and a report on where AI assistants name you. Same vocabulary, different deliverables.
Buyers rarely lose money here because one discipline is fake. They lose it because two proposals use the same nouns for different work, and nobody normalises the line items before signing. We build and instrument this work at DevCommX, which means we routinely read both contracts for the same client and find the same $4,000 of technical audit billed twice. This piece is about the paperwork, not the theory. If you want the category definitions, they live in our guide to LLMO vs SEO vs GEO vs AEO, and everything below assumes you already have them.
The short answer: AEO services vs SEO services are two different deliverables sold with the same vocabulary
The vocabulary overlaps because the work genuinely overlaps at the base. Google's own documentation on AI features and your website states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimisations are necessary, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link. Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features makes the same point: AI search is still search.
That has an uncomfortable commercial consequence. A vendor can sell a contract labelled AEO, deliver conventional technical and content SEO, and not be lying about the mechanism. Just know that is what you bought, and do not pay a premium for the label. The reverse happens too: an SEO retainer already doing entity work, schema and comparison content produces AEO outcomes without naming them, which is fine until you buy a second retainer to repeat it.
Use one test to separate the two contracts. Ask each vendor to name the single artifact that will exist at month three under their contract and would not exist under the other. An SEO answer names pages, fixes and links. An AEO answer names a versioned prompt set, a crawler access matrix, third party placements, and a share report. No distinct artifact means one service with two price tags.
What an SEO retainer actually contains
Strip the deck away and a standard SEO retainer is four cost centres. A technical workstream: crawl and index diagnosis, site speed, internal linking, redirects, sitemap hygiene. Content production, usually the largest line by cash even when it is described as strategy. Off site work, mostly digital PR and link acquisition. And reporting, which means Search Console plus a rank tracking licence and a monthly call.
The measurement surface is the important part, because it determines what the vendor is on the hook for. Search Console reports clicks, impressions and average position against queries and pages, which is a first party surface with a defined denominator. That is why SEO contracts can carry reasonably specific performance language: everyone agrees where the number comes from. Note that Google now also ships a generative AI performance report covering impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which quietly moves part of the AI surface into the SEO vendor's existing tooling.
The exit position matters more than buyers expect. When an SEO retainer ends you keep the pages, the fixes and the links, because they live on your domain. What you lose is the historical rank data, which sits inside the vendor's tool licence. Ask for a full export as a contract term, and be realistic that most of what you buy is content throughput. As we argue in why AEO will not fix average content, neither contract rescues a weak page.
What AEO services actually contain
Genuine AEO services contain five things an SEO retainer usually does not. First, an entity pass: making your name, category, product names and claims consistent across your site, your documentation and the third party profiles that describe you, so a model resolves one entity rather than three. Second, answer first restructuring of the pages buyers ask about, meaning extractable definitions, comparison tables and question level headings rather than a long narrative.
Third, crawler access as an explicit deliverable. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes distinct agents with distinct jobs, including GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search results, and ChatGPT-User for fetches a person triggers, each controllable separately in robots.txt. Anthropic publishes equivalent guidance for its crawlers. A real AEO scope produces a matrix of which agents you allow and why. Most SEO retainers have never opened that file.
Fourth, source coverage: the review pages, listicles and category roundups that models retrieve when a buyer asks for a shortlist. That work sits closer to digital PR than to link building, which is why brand mentions behave differently from backlinks in AI search. Fifth, measurement against a named prompt set. If you want that written as a statement of work, it is what our AEO services engagement is built around is built around. Hold any vendor to the same specificity.
Side by side: scope, deliverables, reporting cadence, exit terms
The table below is the normalisation sheet. Print both proposals, map every line item into a row, and leave the row blank where a proposal is silent. The blanks are where the month four argument happens, and the right hand column forces a vendor to fill one in.
Two rows deserve a pause. The attribution row is the honesty test: a vendor who will not write down what they refuse to claim has not thought about measurement. The technical control row causes the operational damage, because robots.txt and snippet directives are one shared file, and two vendors editing it without a named approver is how a site quietly leaves a surface it used to appear in.
Where AEO services vs SEO services overlap, and why you are probably paying twice
The overlap is not marginal. Indexation, crawlability, page speed, internal linking, content quality and structured data serve both outcomes, and Google's documentation is explicit that AI feature eligibility runs through ordinary Search eligibility. If two vendors both scope a technical audit, both scope schema, and both scope a content calendar, you are buying the shared foundation twice and calling the second purchase innovation.
Four duplicates show up most often. The technical audit, usually billed as a one off in both contracts. Schema implementation, which appears as rich results work in one and as AI structuring in the other. Content production, where the same page count is quoted by both. And tooling, where two vendors each pass through a crawler licence and a rank or visibility tracker for the same domain. Cut the second instance of each and you have usually funded the genuinely distinct AEO work out of the savings.
The rational structure is one owner for the shared foundation and a second, narrower contract for what is genuinely additional: the entity pass, the crawler matrix, source coverage and the prompt set programme. Split the money with a model rather than instinct. Our SEO and AEO budget model for 2026 sets out how to allocate between the two without double counting the base.
How to compare two proposals that use the same words for different work
Step one, normalise into five buckets. Technical, on page content, off site, measurement, governance. Rewrite every line of both proposals into exactly one bucket using your words, not theirs. Most of the apparent difference between two proposals disappears at this step, which is the point. Step two, count deliverable units, not verbs. Six pages, one audit, four placements, twelve reports. A proposal that resists being counted is describing effort rather than output.
Step three, cross examine. Hand each vendor the other's proposal with pricing removed and ask what is missing. The SEO vendor will usually flag the absence of crawl and index work behind the AEO scope. The AEO vendor will usually flag that a keyword map says nothing about how an answer is assembled. Both critiques are usually correct, which tells you the answer is a split scope rather than a winner. Step four, price the overlap out of whichever proposal you would keep second.
Step five, compare the measurement surfaces and their limits. This is where comparing SEO proposals against AEO proposals gets genuinely hard, because the surfaces are not equivalent. Pew Research Center found users clicked a search result in 8 percent of visits with an AI summary against 15 percent without, and clicked a source inside the summary in 1 percent of visits. A vendor promising click traffic from AI citations is promising the rarest event in that dataset. Ask instead for presence and share, and hold the method to the standard in our guide to measuring LLMO and AI visibility.
What to put in the contract that neither vendor will suggest
Define a citation. Write down what counts: which engines, which modes, how many runs per prompt, and what evidence is retained. Without that clause your AEO vs SEO contract comparison collapses in month three into an argument about whether a brand mention with no link counts. Attach the prompt set as an exhibit. It is the measurement instrument, it must be frozen and versioned, and it must leave with you. A vendor who treats their prompt set as proprietary is selling you a number you cannot recompute.
Name an approver for robots.txt and snippet directives. Google's robots meta tag specifications cover nosnippet, max snippet and the data nosnippet attribute, each of which can remove you from snippet eligible surfaces. These are legitimate tools and they are also a single point of failure when two agencies hold the keys. One named approver, changes in writing. Register third party assets in your name. Any profile, listing or placement created during the engagement should be owned by you, not the agency, or you rent your own presence.
Require raw data, monthly, in CSV. Dashboards are a rendering, not a record. Set the exit terms explicitly: a full export within thirty days, no removal of schema on termination, and a written statement of which third party accounts transfer. Finally, add a no guarantee clause stating that neither party will claim a guaranteed citation in any engine. For the operational checklist under these clauses, see our LLMO checklist and the mechanics in how to get cited by ChatGPT.
Scope AEO Services vs SEO Services With DevCommX
If you are holding two proposals and cannot tell where one ends and the other begins, normalise them against the table above and cross examine both vendors on the blanks. DevCommX runs this as a scoping exercise: we map both proposals into the five buckets, mark the duplicate lines, and write the measurement and exit clauses you can hand to either vendor. We will tell you when the honest answer is to keep your existing SEO retainer and buy nothing else. Bring both proposals and book a scoping call.

FAQ
What is included in AEO services?
Credible AEO services include an entity consistency pass across your site and off site profiles, answer first restructuring of the pages buyers ask about, schema and snippet controls, a crawler access check for each AI agent you care about, source coverage on the third party pages models retrieve, and monitoring that runs a fixed prompt set per engine and reports where you are named.
Do I need both SEO and AEO?
In most cases yes, but not as two separate retainers with duplicate line items. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet before it can appear in AI features, so crawlability, indexation and content quality serve both outcomes. Buy the shared foundation once, then buy the AEO specific work that an SEO retainer genuinely does not cover.
How do I compare SEO proposals?
Rewrite both proposals into the same five buckets: technical, on page content, off site, measurement, and governance. Count deliverable units rather than activity verbs, then price the overlap out of whichever proposal you would keep second. Finish by asking each vendor the other vendor's question, because the gaps in their answers are the real difference between the two contracts.
How do AEO services vs SEO services differ in a contract?
The difference in AEO services vs SEO services is the obligation, not the vocabulary. An SEO retainer usually obliges the vendor to produce ranking positions measured in Search Console. AEO services oblige the vendor to produce presence in AI answers measured against a named prompt set. Read the deliverables schedule and the exit clause, because those two sections separate the contracts far more clearly than the sales deck does.
Can an AEO vendor guarantee ChatGPT will cite me?
No, and a guarantee is a reason to walk away. Assistant answers vary between runs, between modes and between users, and no vendor controls retrieval or generation. What a vendor can commit to is the work: the pages restructured, the crawler access confirmed, the third party sources pursued, and the measurement run on an agreed schedule with raw data handed over.
How long should an AEO services contract run before you judge it?
Long enough to clear measurement noise. In our practice that means three to six months, which is a practitioner view rather than a published benchmark. Ask the vendor to establish a noise floor in month one by running the identical prompt set twice with no changes in between, then judge only movements larger than that spread. A contract promising a verdict at week six is promising to read variance as progress.
